Google has decided to acquire some smartwatch technology from Fossil Group for $40 million. The technology is still under development and will also see a part of Fossil’s R&D team join Google. As per Fossil’s EVP and chief strategy and digital officer Greg McKelvey, the deal will lead to a “new product innovation that’s not yet hit the market.” He also sees the deal as a transaction between the two companies instead of an acquisition by Google....

Google has released the August security patch for all compatible Nexus and Pixel devices. The latest security patch for Android fixes a number of vulnerabilities found in Android’s Media framework and other low-level components offered by MediaTek, Broadcom, and Qualcomm. Google has once again broken down the security patch into two parts. The security patch dated August 1 patches vulnerabilities found in the framework and libraries, while the full patch dated August 5 patches vulnerabilities found with low-level system components....

Google today announced on its product forums that it has started rolling out the Android Wear 5.1.1 update for all the Android Wear running smartwatches out there. Last week, UAE President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan issued a new set of federal laws which include one forbidding UAE citizens from using VPNs to mask their digital footprints. As reported by International Business Times, anyone caught using a VPN or proxy server could end up cooling their heels in jail and will face a fine of between $136,000 - $545,000. The regulation stipulates: There are past laws which have been enforced in the country related to VPNs....
